A Birch Floor with Curved Inlay

A birch floor designed with the artist who lives on it — curves and arches routed through the full field, every seam tongue-and-grooved, built from scratch.

The owner is an abstract artist. He had just bought the house and needed flooring along with other work; we removed walls and carried much of the design for the whole project. Plain wood floors were never the brief.

The design was worked out between us: he brought what he wanted, we showed where a change would hold the idea at lower cost, and it went back and forth until it was right. The floor was then built from scratch — floating tongue-and-groove seams, with the curves and arches routed through the entire field.
